A trip to the doctor's office may be on some parents "to do" lists as they prepare to send their kids back to school.

Dr. Judy Macdonald, medical officer of health with Alberta Health Services, says it's recommended kids get in to a public health office before they start kindergarten.

"They have a pre-school booster for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and polio that's due at that point as well as a second dose of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines so if there should be an appointment made pretty quickly so children are already up to date."

AHS offers in-school vaccine programs for students in Grade 5 and Grade 9.

Macdonald says they do their part to make sure all students are aware of vaccine opportunities.

"At any point if a child is new to a school or they're new to Canada then public health nurses will check their records and make sure that they're up to date or offer the opportunity to be up to date according to our Alberta recommendations."

Vaccination records can be checked at any time by calling a local public health office.
