The Okotoks Public Library has linked up with The Baby Box Co.

The library is now a distribution site for baby boxes which are described as being an over sized shoe box that acts as a safe space for new born babies to sleep in.

The baby boxes are free and available to expecting and new parents with children three months old and under.

Lara Grunow, assistant librarian, says people need to go online to register for a box.

"Once they sign up for their box they will be given a registration certificate and they will bring that to the library," she says. "We're piloting this on January 27th which is our Family Literacy Day so from 11- 2 during the day they can come in with their certificate and we will give them their box."

The library has 60 baby boxes available as they pilot the project.

Grunow says offering baby boxes supports both new parents and the library.

"We're just really excited to help young families out and maybe it'll bring in some people who don't already use the library and maybe they'll see that it's a pretty cool place, especially if you have little kids as we have lots of preschool programming that's always running and we'd be happy to have more people come and take advantage of the great programs we run here."
