Christmas gift-giving can be hectic and stressful trying to find the perfect gift for that special someone.

Searching for the right gift can sometimes lead people to look at pets as a gift. Surprising someone on Christmas morning with a new kitten or puppy may sound like a good idea but the responsibilities of owing a pet don't end on Christmas Day.

Veterinarian Dr. Tony Gerrow from the Okotoks Veterinary Clinic says, if giving the gift of a furry friend is in your plan this Christmas there is an alternative.

"The move to get certificates and have the certificate under the tree instead of a live puppy or kitten coming out of a box, seems to be taking off quite well and I'm sure the shelters are quite happy about that." says Dr. Gerrow.

He says doing research and looking into some of the expenses and responsibilities are important details to take into consideration before buying a pet for Christmas.

"With most puppies and kittens they need three sets of vaccinations in the first three months of life and that can get to be $200, spaying and neutering can be $300 - $400, and identification is something we really promote so, tattooing and microchipping can be into $100," explained Dr. Gerrow.

He also says there are other on going costs associated with pet ownership which include food and cleaning up after your pet plus, the added responsibility of taking care of them on a daily basis with regular walks and much-needed attention.

He says the first year and the on going expenses can really add up and he recommends doing your home work. Going on line and talking to a vet can be a great source of information and help to make an informed decision.

"People are always welcome at most veterinary clinics to give us a call and come by and ask us questions face to face and we can answer most questions and pave the pathway." says Dr. Gerrow.

Dr. Gerrow says if you do happen to receive a pet for Christmas, you should call your veterinarian and go online and research care for that pet.
