The Foothills School Division is looking at setting up full-day, five-day-a-week kindergarten.

Assistant superintendent Drew Chipman says registration's open for the program at Spitzee School in High River, in Okotoks Dr. Morris Gibson and Big Rock and in Black Diamond C. Ian Mclaren.

He says it depends on how many parents sign their kids up.

"Dr. Ramsey was providing an update with the trustees as to how that registration's coming and it's looking like it's pretty positive at those schools," he says.

Chipman says all-day kindergarten is something the division's looked at on and off for a while.

"We really just had that decision made last month that we would assess what the desires of parents are, whether there's an appetite for it, whether there's a need for it and a desire to provide that full-day kindergarten, so that's why we're looking at numbers first and based on that we'll provide those programs," he says. "It's only at those schools to start with but if it continues to gain traction and momentum I'm sure we'll be looking at where that can be implemented in other locations."

The vice-principal at Spitzee school, Bill Holmes says it'll cost $259 a month.

"A little bit different than the half-day program, both programs follow provincial curriculum so the full-day program would allow for maybe a little bit more in-depth learning as far as that goes," Holmes says.

It's set to start in September.
