The province has officially tabled its cannabis legislation.

The proposed legislation involves both the sale of cannabis, as well as the purchasing, growing, and consumption of it.

Under the proposal, Albertans will have two ways to purchase marijuana, both through privately and government owned operations.

Retail stores selling marijuana will only be able to sell cannabis, and related products, meaning there will be no co-location with alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, or any other sales.

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission will oversee the seale of marijuana through private retailers.

If the legislation is passed the Provincial government will also introduce online marijuana sales July 1, 2018, while medical marijuana sales will remain federally regulated.

Anyone over the age of 18 will be able to purchase marijuana through both government and privately owned business.

Those who do purchase marijuana will only be able to carry 30 grams at a time, there is no limit on the amount kept at home.

Albertans will also legally be able to grow four cannabis plants per household.

As for public consumption, the same rules apply as tobacco smoking and vaping.
