The Alberta Beef Producers Annual General Meeting goes from Monday December 5 to Wednesday December 7 in Calgary.

Executive Director Rich Smith says it's a chance to bring together delegates from across the province to talk about the issues that are important to the industry.

"We actually do elect our Board of Directors, we'll set our executive for next year because those directors serve one year terms so we'll be discussing the governance of our organization for the coming  year," Smith says. "We're having presentations about the implications of land use and resource activity in Alberta on the future of our industry, we're talking about farm safety, establishing a culture of safety on farms and ranches, we have a noted food columnist from Calgary talking about consumer trends with food and beef, so I think it'll be a full meeting."

Smith says the talk about safety is on some level connected to Bill 6 but it's more a piece of labour legislation and as an industry they recognized even before Bill 6 they needed to do more to make farms more healthy and safe for all workers not just paid employees covered by the legislation.

"As an organization we need to work with the government and work with producers to try and make sure we're in a position to deal with the impacts of the legislation and the regulations, but we think it's more important that we move forward on health and safety itself," he says.

He says the Canadian beef brand has gained traction internationally and consumer demand is up along with consumer loyalty so they have a couple speakers coming from the Canada Beef Centre of Excellence.

The meetings are being held at the Sheraton Cavalier Hotel.
