The Okotoks running club is holding their 38th annual Sheep River Road Race on Saturday.

The event features a five or ten-kilometer race that participants can take part in, along with a two-kilometer run that was added around ten years ago for kids.

Race Director Chuck Holmstrom says that over the years the route has changed, but the hope has always been to be able to run around nature in the community.

"There have been some different routes over the years, but we have always tried to stay on the pathway system in town and as close to the river as possible."

Anyone who was under the age of 18 paid $5 to participate in the run, while adults paid $25 or $40, depending on if they wanted a commemorative t-shirt.

Holmstrom hopes the low price will bring out more runners, but it doesn't cover the cost of holding the event.

"We are trying to keep the cost as low as possible to promote running, particularly with younger people, but if it weren't for our sponsors, we wouldn't be able to hold the run at all."

Holmstrom adds that the race is always a great family event, especially since they added the kids run.

"It is a great family fun event that we encourage people to come and check out even if they aren't running this year," Holmstrom says.

If you would like to participate but can't make it to Saturday's race, everyone can join the running club on Saturday mornings in front of the rec center for their usual runs.
