The high school basketball season kicks off for local teams in the next week or so.

Highwood Mustangs Varsity girls Coach, Ryan Hayden, says they fire things up this weekend.

"We have kind of a pre-season tournament in Medicine Hat this weekend. The we come back and get going into our regular season next Wednesday (December 5) in Black Diamond against the Oilfields Drillers. Then we have about four league games before Christmas."

Hayden says they also have boys and girls grade nine teams, who'll play on the junior high circuit around the Foothills, but no junior girls team, or JV or Varsity boys this year.
