Dewberry's Kurt Bensmiller took the Guy Weadick Days chuckwagon title Sunday for the first time in his career.

He just edged out 1981 winner Kirk Sutherland by just over a tenth of a second.

Bensmiller says he ran the same horses he finished second with in Medicine Hat last week, and it paid off this week.

"We shipped in from Jordie and Tamara Fike's, they let us stay there all week. So, we brought in the same six horses we knew we were going to use so it didn't matter how anybody ran, or what they changed up. We had our minds made up before we got here.

Bensmiller is one of the hottest drivers on the WPCA tour right now.

He was the 2014 and 2015 Calgary Stampede Champion, and took the World Title in 2015.

This year, he finished seventh in Grande Prairie, sixth in Saskatoon, second in Medicine Hat and then won in High River.

He's also leading the points standings for the WPCA World Championship.

He's getting hot again at just the right time with the two big races of the season, the Ponoka Stampede and the Calgary Stampede over the next couple of weeks, with some big money on the line.

At the very least Bensmiller heads into the next two races as one of the drivers to watch very closely.

Okotoks Mark Sutherland won the top day money with the fastest time of the day, finishing ninth overall in High River.

High River's Jason Glass was 10th.

Fellow High River driver Jordie Fike was 18th and Dayton Sutherland was 34th.

The chucks now hit the road again as they're off to Ponoka for six days of racing starting Wednesday, June 28 and winding up Monday, June 3.
