Westwinds Communities will soon be launching 10 affordable housing units in Okotoks.

The Drakes Towns project will be part of a larger 70-unit on Milligan Drive and Drake Landing Boulevard.

Westwinds has been working with the Town of Okotoks and a private developer on the project, as well as the recently announced $227,000 from the province as part of the Affordable Housing Partnerships program.

Westwinds CAO Lauren Ingalls says there are some criteria for those looking to apply.

"There will be income thresholds for the program. They're two and three bedroom units and there are stairs, though two of them are barrier-free and have main floor bedrooms with another suite, bedroom, and bathroom on the lower level. Primarily it focuses on families, that's our biggest demographic."

In April they'll be releasing more information including layouts, rental rates, and application packages.

Ingalls says it's been in the works for about two years and is a collaboration between Westwinds and multiple levels of government.

"The Town of Okotoks has been instrumental in helping this project and the partnership materialize with Partners Development Group. Through the town's Affordable Housing Strategy, they have $15,000 per unit available, so we will be accessing that funding when we obtain occupancy for those units. It's truly a partnership from a municipal, provincial, and we've applied for federal financing."

The units will be ready for tenants to move in in June.
