Today marks Black Friday across the nation, and the Southern Alberta Better Business Bureau has some tips for a safe and successful shopping trip this year.

Shawna Kay-Thomas, External Communications Specialist for the BBB, says a few simple strategies can help make this busy holiday shopping day a little easier.

"Try to take a bag or a purse that has zippers so you can always lock your stuff in. It's going to be crowded, persons are going to be rushing, pick pockets are around, as well, and you don't want to lose anything that is so valuable during this shopping time," she said.

Thomas says it's always best practice to request a proof of purchase, even for gift cards.

"We know this is also a time when people get gifts cards for others. We encourage people to always ask for a gift receipt, just in case you want to return the gift card, or the gift itself, you have a receipt to show for that product," she said.

Thomas adds there are many inquiries patrons need to make to ensure a smooth shopping process.

"Check the warranty information, inquire about the store's return policy, you want to make sure you can exchange or return, and do your research. If you're planning to go to a certain store, check reviews about the stores and products," she said.

It is estimated by the Retail Council of Canada that approximately 40 per cent of Canadians plan to shop on Black Friday both in stores and online.
