The results are in!!

For the uninitiated and unaware, a few weeks ago we sent the Town of Okotoks THIS LETTER. We asked the town if they would consider changing the names of the street sweepers in town. I didn't think much of it until we got a call asking if...

1. We were being serious? (oh, 100%)

and

2. They can use the idea this week as a contest with residents

Well ABSOLUTELY! AND it worked really well alongside Public Works Week.

After a week of collecting dozens on dozens of names... A small group of Town and Eagle employees got together to decide the new name for two of the street sweepers in town. Before we get to that I would like to thank Jamie Greensheild, Peter McDowell, Charlene Parker and Melanie Heemeryck for turning this silly idea I had into a really amazing community building contest!

So without further ado...

Honourable Mentions

-Rocky (for the Big Rock and for picking up rocks)

-Elma Fudd

-Sandy McGrab

-Sweepy McSweepFace (context)

-Dr. Hinsweep tribute to Chief Medical Officer

These names are truly wonderful! From tributes to local landmarks to the lovely Dr. Hinshaw. These are some pretty sweet street sweep submissions... but none of these came close to the names of our final picks

Round of applause for these fine mentions

Final Names!

Here are the final two... Picked because, not only are they a wonderful play on words, but they are both are fun and approachable for all ages and walks of life!

(drum roll please)

-Lightning McClean

and

-Sweeping Beauty

Pretty Great, hey!

Imagine that little one of yours watching Sweeping Beauty roll by across from your house or seeing Lightning McClean drive past on your way to work. It put a smile on my face and they haven't even put the names on them yet!

Stay tuned! We will be joining the town in the near future to unveil these fine new names! Thank you to the town for their help and legwork and most of all thanks to YOU, the reader, for taking part and coming up with these amazing names :D

Some notes about these glorious machines!
The Town Transportation team has a robust street sweeping program to prevent debris from entering stormwater systems and to ensure roadways are clear of debris. The Town sweeps streets throughout the year and crews are currently concentrating on the Priority 1 and 2 routes.  Last year, the Town street sweepers swept approximately 130 KMS of roadway and picked up nearly 100 tandem dump truck loads of debris.
