The world of Pop Culture, Movies, Music... they all took a big hit and it's interesting to think about what it'll evolve into.

Let's start with Music!

There are two major categories here: the covers and the originals. We’ve seen everything from "My Sharona" by The Knack to "My Corona", “We Didn’t Spread The Virus” and "Fight the Virus!" After hearing these... I’m not sure many of us will ever be able to sing the originals again.

Then we have the songs that would never have existed without COVID-19. Mainstream hits like TwentyOne Pilots' "Level of Concern" to Ariana and Bieber's new hit "Stuck With U." Both songs that came out of the feeling of being quarantined while COVID spreads more and more.

Then there are also these gems... There is the Vietnamese hygiene song, the Ugandan MP singing about coming together, and the many MANY remixes of Cardi B’s coronavirus video.

What about Movies?

It's still strange to see a large gathering of people on the TV... "2 METERS APART!!" I'll find myself thinking while watching the latest season of Westworld.

I am sure that the writers of your favourite TV shows or movies have already thought out what a coronavirus themed episode would look like. Think about having walk-and-talks while staying six feet apart every day? I need it in my life.

According to Google Trends, interest in TV shows, films and books about doomsdays and pandemics are booming. Google searches for "virus movies", "pandemic movies" and "pandemic TV" have all spiked in the province since Jan 1st. Films like Pandemic and Contagion are obvious standouts but searches for apocalyptic fiction are also on the up, indicating an increased appetite for the genre.

Locally... Musicians, filmmakers and artists all moving to the online world making and creating to keep them busy. Live streams to online auctions. If you want to support or check out the locals check out our Drive Host Tom Barker! He has his Thursday Night House Concert Series to bring musicians back into the "stage!" The town has it's RPAC@Home series. Even the Okotoks Film Fest is going ahead online.

So now that things are opening up will we be able to see movies now right? Go to concerts this summer?

Not yet...

Some businesses will be permitted to reopen on the 14th, with more to come on the 25th, and the rest to follow on June 1st. Many regulations and health orders will remain in place, with movie theatres, pools, arenas, rec centres, and nightclubs remaining closed. Gathering of over 15 people, concerts, festivals, and in school K-12 classes are still not permitted.

Pandemic films and books... even listening to the new quarantine music could be an easier, more contained way to engage with what's going on — with guaranteed closure.

Stay Safe
