New Year's Eve was a momentous occasion for the communities of Black Diamond and Turner Valley as they officially became Diamond Valley on January 1st.

The amalgamation of Turner Valley and Black Diamond has been a long time coming with the idea first surfacing in the mid-1980s. Following negotiations and engagement, the two town councils decided to proceed with an amalgamation application in September 2021.

To the sounds of noisemakers and cheers, the unification became official at the strike of midnight.

Along with the celebrations, residents were treated to horse-drawn rides, skating and firepits as well as dancing and music in the town's Flare n' Derrick hall.

The evening saw a spectacular fireworks show from Millenium park and concluded with a New Years Gala hosted by the Diamond Valley Sustainable Living Centre. A new organization that promotes activities that achieve security of food, water, energy, and related environmental resources.

Residents took to social media to thank those involved.

"Just want to send a great big thank you to all the other businesses and so many volunteers who helped put on an evening of good old fashioned family fun!! What a great night!" said Kelsey Noland.

Another resident Katie Bakken thanked the towns.

"Thank you to the Towns of Turner Valley and Black Diamond ... Much fun was had by all. We're already looking forward to next year!"
