A school in Edmonton has been identified as the first in Alberta with an in-school transmission of COVID-19.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw says Alberta Health Services has determined that there were two cases that were contagious while in Waverly School and one was the source for the other.

She says even with all the care that's been taken AHS always expected to see some in-school transmission.

Of the 2,415 schools in the province, only 57 have had any cases of coronavirus.

"Managing transmission in schools is part of learning to live with COVID-19 and the reason we have aggressive public health measures in place, " she says. "Identifying in-school transmission potential quickly and taking action is crucial to limiting the spread and keeping schools safe."

She says it's important not to shame any students or school staff or to think badly of a school with an outbreak or believe they have done anything wrong.

Hinshaw says that will just keep people from reporting symptoms and could hasten the spread of the illness.
