A severe thunderstorm watch is currently in effect for several areas of the Foothills, including High River, Okotoks, and De Winton.

According to Environment Canada, current conditions could develop into thunderstorms bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and large hail.

The alert was issued for the following regions:

-Foothills Co. near Cayley
-Foothills Co. near High River and Aldersyde
-Foothills Co. near Longview and Eden Valley Res.
-Foothills Co. near Okotoks and De Winton
-Foothills Co. near Priddis and Brown-Lowery Prov. Park
-Foothills Co. near Turner Valley and Black Diamond
-M.D. of Willow Creek near Claresholm and Stavely
-M.D. of Willow Creek near Nanton and Parkland
-Rocky View Co. near Bragg Creek and Tsuu T'ina Res.

Environment Canada is warning of possible damage from hail, which can cause major damage to property as seen last week in Calgary, and strong winds which can also cause damage to property, and even blow larger vehicles off of roads.

These conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing funnel clouds and heavy rain today.

Nickel size hail and strong wind gusts are also possible.

Residents are encouraged to monitor alerts and forecasts to stay aware of changing conditions. Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.
