Fire crews responded to a semi-trailer fire on Highway 2 this morning.

The semi-driver pulled over on the right shoulder and detached the empty trailer when he noticed it was on fire, and the trailer remained there while crews fought to contain the blaze.

The Foothills Fire Department out of Heritage Pointe was first to respond, with Okotoks personnel getting a call at around 10:20 a.m.

Acting Deputy Chief with the Okotoks Fire Department Dave Hodgins says Foothills crews were already on top of things when they arrived.

"When we arrived on scene, the semi-trailer was fully involved. Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and they are still on scene in overhaul mode."

Personnel were also working to stop the fire from spreading, and luckily it didn't get far.

"Only for a few feet beyond the trailer. The grass is quite green right now so that makes a big difference in how far the fire travels."

He says traffic in the area will be affected for a while, as there's still work to be done.

"People will notice a disruption in traffic on the right-hand side on Highway 2 around 322 while crews continue to complete their overhaul of it and get ready to move the trailer off of the highway... We always recommend that people use the overpasses and cross at 552 and Highway 7 whenever possible."
