A man and his dog are believed to have drowned at Spray Lakes.

On Sunday, August 7, the Calgary man and his family were fishing in the Spray Valley Provincial Park when their dog jumped from the boat.

The man jumped into the water to rescue the dog, though he and the animal soon submerged under the water and did not resurface.

Efforts are underway to locate the two, with Kananaskis Emergency Services, Alberta Conservation Officers, Canmore Fire Rescue, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officers, the Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society, and the RCMP currently involved in search efforts.

While the search is underway, the Canmore RCMP is asking members of the public to avoid the southern Spray Lakes area.

RCMP will send updates when more information is available.
