Summer holidays aren't that far away and the Alberta RCMP are offering tips to avoid being the victim of a break and enter in your home.

As the weather turns warmer more and more of us will be out building decks or mowing lawns.

The RCMP recommends being extra careful not to leave expensive items lying around or in unlocked sheds or garages.

Updating locks, deadbolts or security measures on buildings frequently, makes them more difficult to break into.

Thieves like buildings that are open, unsecured and unlocked.

Installing motion sensor lights or alarm systems and cutting away overgrown shrubs that block any sightlines will work as a deterrent.

If you find that your property has been stolen or any buildings have been broken into, we encourage you to contact your nearest RCMP detachment immediately  to file a report.

In 2021, 10,529 reports of break and enters were reported in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions.
