The town's summer event season begins today with the annual Kite Festival.

Residents can enjoy today's lovely weather with some kite flying, though participants are asked to take some safety precautions including physical distancing and watching out for power lines.

For those without a kite of their own, the town has posted an instructional video on how to make one.

Community Events Specialist Zach Adams says there's also an activity planned for those looking to get out and stretch their legs a little more.

"We also have a kite themed scavenger hunt. We're going to be hiding kites around the community that all have positive messaging on them. We've released a cheat sheet that gives you hints as to their location, so you can go an know what you're looking for to go and find all of our hidden kites."

He says there's value in holding these kinds of events, even if they have to be altered to accommodate health orders.

"Even though we can't be physically together in these times, it's important to have these events even to just give us a little semblance of normal. It's just something to look forward to and to get you outside experiencing things in a different way."

Those participating in the Kite Festival are asked to post photos and videos to social media with #OkotoksStrongerTogether
