Foothills runners of all ages gathered at the Centennial Centre yesterday for the 41st annual Sheep River Road Race.

The event consists of a 2k, 5k, and 10k run for local athletes, with proceeds going to the Okotoks Track and Cross Country Club, a youth running club started just over 3 years ago.

Though some residents may have lamented yesterday's cloudy skies and brisk temperature, Mark Toombs with the Big Rock Runners says it provided perfect conditions for running.

"This is perfect, because the sun isn't out, and it's not raining or anything, but a little cloud cover is great for the run because you heat up on the run. Having no sun is actually good for a run. The runners would love this; shorts and t-shirt, this is perfect for it."

A few changes were implemented this year, namely the new starting location and a change in route, which took runners down Okotoks' many pathways by the Sheep River.

Toombs says the change in route really brought the run closer to its namesake.

"We wanted to try and get back to that, being the Sheep River Road Race. I think back in the day when it was named 41 years ago, it was on the roads in town. Now we keep it to the pathways, and Okotoks has down a great job with pathways. As soon as we get out of here, we go on this one little short road and then it's all pathway."

He says a lot of work went into this year's event due to all the changes.

"Because we changed so many things up, changed the venue, changed all the routes, introduced the medals, et cetera, there was a lot of work to do this year. The town has been great, they were very supportive of the run. They've helped us out with getting the venue selected and approved our routes and everything. We've worked closely with the town to make sure it would work for them, and they've been wonderful."

Dan Marsh finished first for the 10k with a time of 36:34, Jacob Heuver came first in the 5k at 18:29, and Noah Heuver was the first in the 2k with 08:11.
