The Okotoks Oilers have a new captain for the upcoming 2021-2022 season.

Tucker McRae says it's an honour to be taking on the role.

"This means a lot to me. I know there's a lot of history in the Okotoks organization and a lot of great players who have worn that C, so it's something that's very special to me, and I'm really looking forward to wearing it."

McRae first played for the Oilers during the 2018-2019 season as an affiliate, playing four games against Brooks.

"Following that year I played full time with the team, and unfortunately after the end of that season, our playoffs were cancelled. This year was another tough season where we only got to play eight regular-season games. I'm heading into my third year and we're hoping we get a full season here where we can play all 60 games and finally play a full season," says McRae.

He expects the transition back to regular play will be a bit of a challenge for everyone, with players likely feeling a little rusty.

"I know a lot of guys haven't played games in a while or are new to the league, new to playoffs, things like that, so I think that's our biggest thing. I think everyone in the league is in the same boat. Everyone is off doing the same thing, so I think it's just who can handle it the best."

As for what he's hoping to accomplish during the upcoming season, it's pretty straightforward.

"I think it's the same goal we have every year. We want to go home with a ring on our fingers, so we're going to do everything we can to win a national championship this year, and I think we have the team to do it."
