Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson has announced he won't be running for re-election this fall.

After five terms as a councillor and three terms as mayor, Robertson says he just felt it was the right time.

"It's time to move on, by all means. There are many things to do in life, and when one chooses to do something, one can't do something else. I believe that 26 years in municipal politics is long enough, I'm getting a little long-in-the-tooth, shall we say. I'm going to leave it fit for the young people to carry on."

He says it's been a pleasure serving the town and its residents during a time of rapid growth for the town.

"It's been humbling and an honour to be the mayor of Okotoks, to serve on town council, to help shape the direction of where this community is headed, and I'd like to think that we've created quite a desirable place to live."

As for the upcoming municipal election, Robertson recommends anyone thinking of running for a council position to explore that option.

"I encourage anyone running for council, read the community report for 2020 and tune into the council meetings to see what it's all about. If you have something to offer, throw your hat in the ring."

In the coming years, he says he'd definitely be willing to offer any opinions or expertise in an advisory role, should he be called upon.

For the most part, he's planning to get out there and take in some sights.

"I'd never say full retirement, there are always many things to do in life, so we'll see what the future has to offer... Certainly travel plans, lots of travel plans."
