The Town of Okotoks has announced mayor Bill Robertson has passed away.

He passed on July 7, following a battle with cancer.

Robertson, 67, was nearing the end of his third term as mayor following five terms on town council. His tenure on council began in 1995, with his election as mayor coming in 2010.

The town saw significant growth during his time on council, going from less than 10,000 people to nearly 30,000.

Many Okotokians will also remember Robertson for his 30 years as a teacher or his enthusiastic demeanour at town events.

Chief administrative officer Elaine Vincent and deputy mayor Florence Christophers were quoted in the town's release, with both remembering Robertson as a leader and a friend.

A book of condolences will be available for residents to sign at the Municipal Centre during operational hours.

You can also sign it virtually on the town's website.

The town has also lowered its flags to half-mast to honour Robertson.

Robertson is survived by his sons Michael, Jeffery and Bradley, and his wife Elaine.
