Today is Show Your 4-H Colours Day, marking the start of National 4-H month.

One club in the High River community is already geared up for another fantastic year.

This year, the Longview 4-H Beef Club has about 35 members, who have already been hard at work halter breaking their calves.

Club Leader, Stephen Hughes, says the kids brought a strong group of calves to weigh in this year.

"I think we'll look really good in May at our Show and Sale. Most calves have a pretty decent temperament, and people are bringing the right kind, and type, to town to get finished and to show. We pushed people a little bit by being early, but that's going to pay off with better finished cattle in May."

Hughes says, on average the 4-H steer projects weighed about 650 pounds at their weigh-in on October 20.

The club has lots of fun events lined up for the kids this year.

"Before Christmas, there's a multi-judging workshop out at Millarville, where the kids can start to learn about that. There is Christmas hamper packing, and in the new year we get into things like public speaking season, which builds into different workshops as we prepare for our Show and Sale."

This year, the club's donation steer has been donated by Meridian Cattle Company, and will be raised by the Cartwright family.

"They're up at Jumping Pound now, but they're originally from this area. It's the last year for their kids in 4-H, and their oldest was one of our original six members back in 2001, so I thought it was a nice bookend to a long 4-H career that they raise the donation steer this year."

The money raised by selling the steer in the spring, will once again be donated to the High River District Health Care Foundation.
