Four brand new state-of-the-art maternity rooms will open for expectant moms next week at the High River Hospital.

The project was made possible with help from the High River Hospital Foundation who raised $1.4 million for the project.

The renovations mean lots of room for family and support members, a birth tub in three of the rooms and moms can now give birth and recover in the same space.

Manager of the Maternity Unit, Chantel Hunter says there was a lot of positive energy around this project.

"The community, our staff, our physicians are elated," said Hunter. "We have been working on this since July of last year and it feels very, very amazing to open."

She adds the staffs favourite part of the room is the space they have for the families and the support team to be comfortable.

"And the state of the art equipment for the mom and the baby."

They are also thrilled to have three of the four rooms equipped with birthing tubs.

"We are one of the first facilities in Canada to have these tubs and we are very, very proud of that. We are working hard as a physician and nursing group to be able to offer water births."

They deliver approximately 350 babies a year in High River.

Dr. Harry Mueller says it's unique for a community the size of High River to have a facility like this.

"To have these kind of faculties with the birthing tubs, and the state of the art facilities, for a smaller city like High River to have these facilities is amazing and to have the community support that made it possible is unique as well."

The High River program allows physicians, midwifes, nurses and allied healthcare professionals support and care for mom through her entire pregnancy and delivery. From the first Low Risk Clinic appointment, through to delivery and post-partum follow up visit.
