Nanton Town Council has joined High River in their opposition to mining along the eastern slopes.

Mayor Jennifer Handley says they know it's a matter for the Province and the Feds, until it comes to the possible effect on the town.

"How will this effect our agricultural and ranching members and that's what we should be speaking to. What are the impacts for our municipality and other municipalities that are downstream of this."

Handley, says their biggest concern is any adverse effect on their water supply.

"It's no secret Nanton is short on water and we have done a lot of work on our water and the quality of our water and we will never do anything that will ever potentially jeopardize our quality and our access to water."

Handley, says they realize the issue is not a municipal one, but she says it becomes one when there's potential to effect the town and it's residents.

"We wanted to be consulted on this. This first we heard about all of this was on social media. And the voice just got louder and louder and louder. And it's become very clear we needed to ask the questions and say what's going on here?"

Handley and Council have fired off a letter to the Premier asking for more details surrounding potential mining and it's downstream impact on the town.
