A call from a good Samaritan led to a Calgary man facing 17 charges near the end of December.

Claresholm RMCP received a call at around 9 a.m. on Dec. 29 after a passerby noticed a vehicle in the ditch north of Nanton with the occupant still inside.

Officers arrived at the scene to check if he was okay amid the extreme cold and soon discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen.

The driver was arrested at the scene, and police searched the car.

They found a handgun with ammo, bear spray, a stolen license plate, and various narcotics.

Steven Hewitt, 41, of Calgary is facing a long list of charges including possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, seven counts of breach of probation, and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He was also charged on an outstanding warrant.

Hewitt was remanded into custody and appeared in court on Jan. 5.
