This week is Canadian Agriculture Literacy Week.

Kaley Segboer with Ag For Life, says they're going to be putting on a couple of events aimed at highlighting the numerous agriculture education programs being delivered across the province every year.

She says they'll have a couple of school breakfasts, one for elementary aged students in Beaumont, and one in Calgary for high school students. Students will enjoy a fresh breakfast served by local farmers, producer groups and volunteers. Following breakfast, students will have the opportunity to ask questions as they participate in an agriculture presentation learning about the many facets of Alberta agriculture and the incredible opportunities the industry offers.

Segboer says there isn't the connection with the farm that there used to be.

"In one generation we've gone from one in three Canadians living on the farm, and now the number is one in 46," she says. "From those stats it's clear to see that we don't have the opportunity to connect and learn about agriculture like we used to so agriculture education programs like the Classroom Education program, the Little Green Thumbs program, Alberta Open Farm Days as well as the City Slicker programs provide the opportunity for students to learn about agriculture from the people in Alberta that are producing it."

Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Alberta Pork Producers and Alberta Farm Animal Care are joining with Ag For Life to provide educational opportunities for young people to learn about farming as well as jobs and opportunities.

Other events happening in the province during CALW include Classroom Agriculture Presentations and an online livestream event for high school students on Agriculture and Climate Change coordinated by Inside Education.
