The Okotoks Fire Department, along with first responders across the country, are honouring fallen heroes this week.

Flags at the fire hall were at half mast in recognition of National Firefighters Memorial Day on Monday and 9/11.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says it's important to acknowledge those who put their lives on the line everyday.

"We see the firefighters that are working today but some of the ones that have passed from different events, either on scene or from different illnesses that firefighters potentially come across in their careers, so just the selfless acts that firefighters do perform on a regular basis." he explains. "I think that it is important that we do recognize these individuals for their dedication and courage day in and day out."

Thevenot adds there's a strong sense of community with first responders.

"There was 412 emergency workers that were lost in September eleventh and I think every first responder takes a moment, especially on a day like today, to remember what happened that day. It's hard on the individuals but it's hard on the families as well and the coworkers."

This past week the Okotoks Fire Department responded to 19 calls including six medical responses, five alarm system activations, five fire calls, and three motor vehicle collisions.
