High River town council wrote off over $54,000 in property tax payments at a recent meeting.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says it all comes from one source.

"Here we are again dealing with the provincial government's neglecting to pay their property taxes on their provincial buildings in all our communities, this isn't just High River, this is every community in Alberta that the province has properties on and they've just said 'We're not paying, we're not providing these grants in lieu of property taxes anymore'," he says.

When the UCP government came to power it paid a portion of the property taxes on its holdings for a year and then stopped paying altogether.

The total came to $54,672.79.
