There's a gingerbread battle afoot in Okotoks.

The annual Gingerbread Station is returning to the Okotoks Art Gallery, and they're currently looking for gingerbread artists.

Once submissions are in, participants will have a window of time to submit their creations, then the public will vote for their favourites.

Prizes are up for grabs in the form of gift cards for local businesses of the winners' choice.

Gallery specialist Katrina Lougheed recalls a few exceptional entries from past years.

"Last year we had one called the 'Ninjabread House' with ninjas infiltrating this gingerbread house. It was so fun. We had a really cool gingerbread carousel with gingerbread horses and everything. There have been some awesome ones."

She also loves the smell that accompanies the creations.

If you're thinking of participating, but work best in a group, you're in luck.

"We are welcoming team entries as well if anyone wants to do a joint effort with your friends, the kids in your class, whatever you want to do. So you can do a team entry, you just have to name a team captain and let us know who that is to be the point of contact."

The deadline to sign up is Saturday, Nov. 6, but you'll have quite a bit of time to actually build it after that.

"You just have to kind of have an idea of what you're going to build because we want a title for it so we can get the signs all prepared. But drop off is going to be on Saturday, November 13th, and also Wednesday and Thursday, November 17th and 18th. So you don't have to have your gingerbread built until around November 18th at the latest," says Lougheed.

The public will vote for their favourites from Nov. 19-Dec. 11, with the winner to be announced on Dec. 16.

More information, including the link to sign up, can be found on the town's website.
