The sky over town hall is a little more colourful following a ceremonial flag raising in honour of Pride Month.

On a Sunday, June 4, beneath a clear and radiant sky, a modest gathering assembled to witness the soaring ascent of the all-encompassing Pride Flag above the town. This act marked the initiation of a week-long celebration dedicated to honouring the LGBTQ2S+ community while recognizing the persistent discrimination they face in modern society.

This event signifies far more than a mere flag raising, says Chair of Okotoks Pride Tom Barker.

"The town coming out and supporting us and helping us get the flag up and helping us really celebrate what pride is, it really shows that this community is changing. This community is getting better, and of course, it just means that we all get to celebrate together."

The raising is the kickoff to a week of festivities. In lieu of the festival, there will be events throughout the community including a Pride Party at Salutè on Saturday, June 10.

"They can expect a couple of events with a couple of drag shows. We've got some coffee events and some cocktail events.

"Calgary pride and the regional pride doesn't happen until the end of the summer, so we figured we kicked the summer off with Pride week during Pride Month."
