It won't be long before the Okotoks Food Bank heads door to door for the Community Wide Food Drive.

Each year the food bank and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints come together for the food drive where bags filled with donations are collected from residents door steps.

Sheila Hughes, Executive Director for the Okotoks Food Bank, says the church volunteers are incredible to work with.

"Their youth groups put all the door knockers and bags together then they go out as families and deliver those then they go back again on the Saturday and pick them all up. Once they're back and they're finished their routes they help us do the initial sort of all the food and package it up to bring it down to the food bank where we again will weigh it all and our volunteers will work at getting it on the shelves."

Last year the food drive brought in a record breaking 32,000 lbs of donations.

Hughes says the food drive is always well received.

"It's a wonderful community effort, we just feel so well supported through that drive. We always hear from people that it's their favourite drive. They like that it says on the bag what we're looking for and that they have it right on their doorstep and they can fill up a bag and put it out. It's quite easy and simple I think for everybody."

The Community Wide Food Drive takes place Sept. 15. Empty donation bags with lists of items the food bank is looking for will be dropped off on door steps the week before.
