The paramedic and first responder community are in mourning after they learned of the news that one of their own colleagues responded to a horrific car crash in which her daughter was involved in.

On November 15, emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision at Big Hill Springs Road and Range Road 24. One female youth who was the passenger in one of the vehicles was flown by STARS air ambulance to a hospital, in life-threatening condition. Her mother, Jayme Erickson, an Airdrie paramedic revealed in a public social media post on November 20 that it was her 17-year-old daughter Montana.

"My worst nightmare as a paramedic has come true. On November 15, at 430pm my partner and I got dispatched to an MVC just west of Airdrie. Upon arrival, we found two patients with injuries, the passenger being trapped and critically injured. I sat in the car and tended to the critically injured patient, doing whatever I could while fire extricated her. STARS air ambulance took over patient care once we got the patient out and flew her to FMC. My shift was over and I went home."

Erickson wrote that minutes after she arrived home the RCMP came to her door and informed her that it was her daughter whom she had just tended to.

"The critically injured patient I had just attended to, was my own flesh and blood. My only child. My mini-me. My daughter, Montana. Her injuries were so horrific I did not even recognize her. I was taken to FMC [Foothills Medical Centre] to see my baby girl, and was informed her injuries were not compatible with life," Erickson wrote. "Today we officially said goodbye to my little girl. I cannot help but be angry for the short amount of time I was given with her. 17 years was not long enough."

Erickson continued the heart-breaking post by adding that although she is thankful for the 17 years she has had with her daughter, she has been left shattered.

"I will never see you graduate and walk across the stage, I will never see you get married, I will never know who you would have been. I love you more than anything in this world (yes, including the goats my girl!). I will cherish the memories we made and the time we had together. I am shattered. I am broken. I am missing a piece of me. I am left to pick up the pieces and expected to carry on."

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
