Okotoks will be getting some new signage this year.

The first signs from the town's 'Wayfinding Project' are to be installed over this spring and summer, according to Community Growth & Investment Manager Colleen Thome.

Phase 1 will include directional pedestrian and vehicle signs in the town's downtown area and major roadways.

After that, banner signage in parks and on pathways will be installed.

Though the Wayfinding signs are a separate project from the new welcome signs and are being carried out by different companies, they will share some design elements, says Community Growth Investments and Sustainability Director Jeff Greene.

"We actually utilized a process to ensure that there was design continuity between the two so that there would be a common look and feel to both signs."

The design phase involved a lengthy engagement process from residents that began in 2020.

"We went through a public process and garnered feedback from people from the community as to some of the elements we wanted to introduce into the Wayfinding, and that included a nod to the environment of Okotoks, reflecting on some of our geographic considerations, and a nod to the future as to where we're going as a community, so it's a nice blend of both the past and the future," says Greene.

According to Greene, the town dedicated a lot of time to ensure they're a good fit for the community.

"The process has been a fairly deliberate process that's taken place over a fairly healthy amount of time, and we wanted to make sure we had not only the best price but the best style, look and feel that's unique to Okotoks and we think this is going to be a really nice value added to the community."

Eventually, the town plans to add digital elements to the signs that could involve things like QR codes or NFC tags.
