A fatal collision had a golden retriever running loose last night.

On Saturday, Jan. 22, at 9:46 p.m., Nanton RCMP, Fire and EMS responded to a single vehicle collision just east of Nanton on Highway 533 east of Range Road 265.

Upon arrival, the first responders found a Chevrolet Silverado in the ditch.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was a 52-year-old man from Three Hills, Alta., who was found deceased.

Through investigation, RCMP and a collision analyst concluded that the driver was heading east when he hit the ditch, leading to the vehicle rolling.

Later that night, once emergency services had left the scene, RCMP were informed that the driver was in fact not travelling alone, but that his golden retriever "JD" was accompanying him on the drive.

Another investigation was carried out by the RCMP, and it was determined that after the fatal incident, JD escaped the vehicle uninjured and ran towards Nanton.

Some locals took him in and started to search for his family.

Through the power of social media, the officers and the local members of the public were able to connect and return the golden retriever back to his family.
