It’s Emergency Preparedness week once again, and Okotoks has got a lot in store.

For every day from May 1-7, the town is sharing tips and advice for eight different facets of safety under the umbrella of the theme “Be Ready for Anything.”

The theme for the first day was ‘know the risks.’

Okotoks Fire Chief Trevor Brice says there are a few emergency situations Okotoks will be well-acquainted with.

“If we think back to floodings and storms in particular in Okotoks, we’re coming up to that season, so this is a great opportunity to get prepared.”

Wildfires are another issue Albertans will be very familiar with, with Okotoks having seen a sizable grass fire in the Drake Landing area a few weeks ago.

Though Foothills residents are no stranger to these kinds of emergencies, they always come as a surprise, and some prep is never a bad thing.

One of the daily themes is ‘making community connections,’ one which Brice stresses the importance of.

“Knowing who your neighbours are, what they expect in an emergency, how you’re going to help each other, what your particular needs are...you may have a senior person living next door to you that might be immobile, so in case of emergency, are you able to assist them to get out? That sort of thing.”

Emergency kits are another big one.

“We recommend getting a 72-hour kit, a three-day supply of water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlight, those sort of things you’ve got in a grab bag. You know where it is, if you have to exit the property, you can just grab that and you’ve got some means of support in the short term.”

The full breakdown, which includes helpful links and videos, can be found on the town’s website.
