Some petroleum-based drilling fluid has spilled into the Sheep River near Fischer Street.

According to the Okotoks Deputy Fire Chief Colin Sager, this came after some residue was found at one of the outfalls along the Sheep River in Okotoks yesterday (February 15th).

"We had some residue the day before, showing up at one of the outfalls. Then, town staff found [the spill] today and then alerted us to that," explains Sager.

The substance escaped down into the storm drain causing the town to bring in vacuum trucks to clean up, including the storm drain and surrounding area.

After the substance was tested, it was determined to be Cutter Stock D, which is an oil that is used for drilling.

Albera Environment has already been notified, and there are no concerns over the health and safety of Okotoks residents.

According to the Town, the spill occurred downstream from the Town's potable water intake source.

Sager says the spill will be cleaned up in a day or two.
