The Okotoks Dawgs started today's (June 28) game strong but couldn't get past the Medicine Hat Mavericks, losing a close one 9-8.

The Dawgs got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the first. With Connor Crowson and Kadyn Williams already on base, Logan Grant hit a single to right field scoring Williams in for the run.

Barry Eiseman got the second RBI of the inning when he stayed patient at bat with bases loaded and earned a walk scoring Crowson in for a run.

Grant would get the inning's final run and gave the Dawgs a 3-0 lead early.

Jarrett Burney got the Dawgs their fourth run on the night in the bottom of the second, and Williams would get the RBI.

The Mavericks came alive in the top of the fourth scoring three runs and cutting the Dawgs lead to just one.

At the top of the fifth Medicine Hat would take their first lead of the game after they got two runners across home plate.

Dawgs answered back in the bottom of the fifth when Grant hit his first of two triples on the night and got into a prime scoring position. Eiseman got his second RBI on the night after hitting a single to left field getting Grant across home plate.

The sixth inning would see no scoring keeping the game tied at 5-5.

Medicine Hat scored four runs in the top of the seventh taking a 9-5 lead and putting the pressure on Okotoks.

With Caleb Lumbard already on base, Brendan Luther stepped up to bat and smacked a home run, cutting the Mavericks lead to two.

In the bottom of the ninth Grant hit his second triple on the night, once again getting the Dawgs in a prime scoring position. When Dawson Santana was up to bat, Grant would score a run on a passed ball.

That would be the last run the Dawgs could earn in the game, falling just short in their first meeting with the Mavericks.

Okotoks and Medicine Hat will run it back tomorrow night at Seaman Stadium with their second of back-to-back games against the Mavericks.

The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
