Two women received the Red Cross Rescue Award last night for saving the life of a legendary baseball journalist.

Savannah Blakley of Okotoks, and Angela Burger of Calgary earned the award for administering life-saving CPR on Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Elliott at the Dawgs year-end banquet in February.

The pair of lifesavers were honoured in front of the home crowd at Seaman Stadium last night before the Dawgs hosted the Brooks Bombers.

Elliott suffered a heart attack while speaking at the banquet last winter.

Blakley, who sprung into action to save Elliot's life, says she was surprised when she originally learned she and Burger had been nominated for the award.

"(Elliott) was the one who nominated us for the award. We weren't expecting him to nominate us or anything like that," she said.

Elliott addressed the crowd at Seaman Stadium last night before the game, thanking Blakley and Burger for saving his life before stopping to embrace them.

Blakley says it's an honour to be a recipient of the award and in the heat of the chaotic moment, her mind went completely blank when she leapt into action.

"Honestly not a lot (was on my mind)," she said. "Just do the things that you were trained to do, go through the motions. You're not really thinking at the time."

Blakley believes learning first aid and CPR training is incredibly important for anyone and everyone, because you never know when you might need it.

"Very important, mainly just to know exactly what an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is, because (that was) the biggest thing that saved his life."
