An officer-involved shooting in Shawnessy has led to charges for a man from Claresholm.

Calgary Police Service was called to the 200 block of Shawville Boulevard S.E. at 4:05 a.m. on Sunday. They had received reports of a suspicious person armed with a weapon, making threatening statements.

After encountering the suspect, police say the situation escalated, and the man was shot.

A release from CPS states the man continued to fail to comply with demands to drop his weapon after the shooting. At that point, additional force was used to take the man into custody and provide medical attention.

Daniel Richard Balcerzak, 35, of Claresholm, has been issued the following charges:

• Two counts of assaulting a police officer
• Two counts of assault with a weapon
• One count of weapon dangerous to public peace
• One count of uttering threats to cause death

The accused remains in custody in hospital and is scheduled to appear in court on September 10.

Balcerzak remains in stable, non-life threatening condition.
