Bareback athlete Ty Taypotat, who calls Nanton home, is sitting in first place after round one at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Red Deer.

He scored an impressive score of 86.00 and picked up almost $10,000 in day money.

Okotoks native Jordan Hansen also had an impressive day as he was only one of two in the field of 12 to stay on for the full eight seconds in Bull Riding.

Hansen and Jared Parsonage (Maple Creek, Sask.) are tied for first, each scoring an 86.00.

And another southern Albertan is sitting in first place in Saddle Bronc.  Kole Ashbacher, hailing from Arrowwood, scored an 85.50 to lead the field while High River's Lucas Macza sits in 6th with an 81.50.

Tie Down Roper Logan Bird from Nanton slipped into 7th spot with a time of 10.8 seconds.  Cole Cornett from Brant and Granum's Wyatt Hayes had no times.

Bulldoggers Harley Cole and Jonny Webb, both from Okotoks, placed 2nd and 8th respectively. Cole with a time of 4.2 seconds and Webb with a 6.4.  Tanner Milan from Cochrane sits in first with a lightning fast 3.8 seconds.

Team Roping also had some solid times for some southern Albertans.

Cole Davison (Vulcan) and Kolton Schmidt sit in 3rd with a time of 5.2 seconds, followed by Wyatt Hayes (Granum) and Tyce McLeod tied for 5th with a 6.0, Tristan Woolsey (Nanton) and Trey Gallais are in 7th with a 6.6, and Clint Buhler (Nanton) and Brett McCarroll had a time of 6.8 seconds and are in 8th.

And in the two ladies' events, Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping, sisters Bradi and Kylie Whiteside qualified for both events.

Kylie had a clean run with a time of 14.13 seconds and is in 5th place while Bradi ran into penalty trouble with a time of 24.20 and is in 12th. 

In Breakaway Roping five of the twelve competitors hail from southern Alberta but unfortunately results have yet to be posted. 

Over in Steer Riding, Claresholm's Hayden Mackay stayed on for a ride of 75.50 landing him in the top spot for a nice paycheque of $850.00 in day money.  

And in novice Saddle Bronc and novice Bareback no southern Alberta athletes qualified this year.

Last, but not least, is the All Around Cowboy with Wyatt Hayes from Granum sitting 5th in day money with $479.00 while Colt Cornet from Brant has yet to earn some day money.
