About a year and a bit.

That's how long it's been without a new single from local singer-songwriter Brettyn Rose.

Ever since her first adventure into the Eagle studios we have been following this talented local all the way through her musical career. She was only 15 when she came in for the first time!

Not just talented but also decorated!

Nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2021 Country Music Alberta Awards with her debut single Running Out of Borrowed Time. That single also got her two 2020 YYC Music Award nominations.

In addition to singing the anthem for the Hitmen as well as the Okotoks Dawgs, you've seen her in the Calgary Stampede Talent Search, during Canadian Country Music Week and performing at shows through the foothills.

Already an impressive resume for the 20-year-old and she is kicking off 2022 with a brand new single fueled by a whole lot of personal growth.

"I spent a lot of time over the pandemic really writing, creating and figuring out who I was as an artist and what I wanted to say, and what music would truly represent who I am. I'm so happy I took the time to do that 'cause I feel like I accomplished that goal and I'm so proud of this new music," says Brettyn in our phone interview the day of the release.

Making Progress is her latest track a year in the making. She started writing in early 2021 with the help of Aaron Pollock and Lydia Sutherland. Dealing with something I think hits all of us hard... Heartbreak. Specifically, exes, seeing that ex with someone new and ultimately moving on and growing.

"I wanted the take-home message to be, it's OK to feel whatever you're feeling after heartbreak or after losing a person like that who was important to you. Also that it's also important to always move forward and make progress towards bettering yourself and always just to remember who you are and that you are an amazing person yourself … your feelings are valid but as long as you keep moving forward, you'll keep making progress and you'll get over them eventually."

Oof... I don't know about you but that kinda kicked me in the heart and that's no accident. She knew what she was doing.

"One of my biggest goals as a songwriter and an artist is I want people to be able to relate their own personal experiences to my songs, which I've written about my own experiences or my inspiration. Even though they might be totally different, physical or actual like literal experiences, they can still relate their personal experiences to the song in some way and make that connection between me and the audience or the listener.”

She continues. “That's one of my favourite things about music and that's always one of my goals.”

It is now available everywhere you can get music and if you're curious on why the 11th.

"I’m a numbers person, so I really liked it was 01/11/22. I liked all those repeating numbers and I've always done that. But I Do was released on 07/07/2020. All those repeating numbers. All I Want Is You was 02/02/2020. I thought 11 looked pretty cool when it was written out.

You can stream or buy it anywhere you listen to music and be sure to follow her on social media! With live shows still up on the air, the best way to support local artists is to follow what they are doing and buy tracks to keep them doing what they love. (and so we can get more great music)

"It is just the start of new music for the year and I can not wait to keep sharing this new chapter. There are more stories to go with this chapter and I am so excited to keep sharing them throughout 2022."
