This Year's Canadian Junior Hereford Association Bonanza cattle show celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The show was held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan from Wednesday, July 31 to Saturday, August 3, where competitors mostly in the age range of 5 to 22 showed their cattle and competed in other events such as public speaking, judging and photography.

Show Co-chair, Karen McKim, says the big anniversary drew out a record crowd.

"We had people that were third generations there having been in it themselves, and now have grandkids that will one day be able to participate in it," she said. "It was really good to see all the people who came out to support the show."

McKim says they had a good turnout with 175 participants showing over 270 head at this year's show, with lots of excitement and ambition within the Hereford community.

"What was cool was there was quite a few from commercial breeds who came out, as well as some that were form the different breeds around, and it was nice to see them taking part in the Hereford industry itself. It allows for us to see there's still a future in the markets that we have right now."

She says they kicked the week off with some educational programing, where they toured an abattoir to learn about the different cuts of meat and the desired marbling in a beef animal.

Participants also heard from a speaker about cattle health and nutrition.

McKim says the event is a great chance for youth to network with other young people with a passion for the industry, as well as sponsors.

She says overall, the event ran smoothly and the kids enjoyed their time at the show despite the hot weather.
