Blackie Community Hall open house is this Tuesday

Foothills County is holding the Blackie Community Hall open house tomorrow (Oct. 25).

Locals will get a chance to discuss the future of Blackie Community Hall and get a tour of the new community hub at Blackie School.

The closure and potential demolition of the Blackie Community Hall have struck a nerve with some residents with sentimental ties to the building.

Blackie School's modernization was intended to provide a new community hub space to replace the aged hall, especially amid health and safety concerns with the building.

Earlier this month, town council received engineering reports detailing what would have to be done to bring the hall up to code.

Issues with the building identified in the report include asbestos and lead-containing materials, unlevel flooring, and the need for a new sprinkler system.

According to the county, all of the necessary renovations would come with a price tag of around $320,000.

The estimated cost of demolition, backfill, and asbestos removal in the engineering report is $88,400 before tax. It should be noted that that figure doesn't include things like permitting, removal of bushes, and ATCO disconnect.

Attendees of the open house are encouraged to look over the reports beforehand.

The event is to be held at Blackie School Tuesday Oct. 25 from 4-7 p.m.
