According to the Southern Alberta Better Business Bureau, approximately 30 per cent of consumers intend to take advantage of Cyber Monday deals today.

Shawna Kay-Thomas, External Communications Specialist for the BBB, says there are a few simple steps to ensuring a successful online shopping experience.

"You want to make sure the website you're shopping on is secure. Two ways you can ensure that, looking for the "https" at the start of the website address, and you want to make sure there is a lock symbol next to the address. If there is no lock symbol, it suggests that the website is not secure," she said.

Thomas adds security should be at the front of consumer's minds when shopping online.

"You want to use your credit card because it's easier to get things reversed if there's anything that goes wrong, or if you did not make a purchase, for example, somebody stole the information and used your card," she said.

Thomas says they encourage patrons to shop local when possible and check the validity of businesses.

"One way is to check online reviews. as well, you can check with the Better Business Bureau, you can call in or see the online reviews for the companies you choose to do business with. We encourage everyone to shop local with small businesses," she said.

If you're unsure as to the validity of a website, a simple check with the Better Business Bureau, or an online search is highly recommended.
