All the warm weather the last few days has had an impact on ice on ponds and lakes in the area.

High River Fire Chief Cody Zebedee says it's best to just stay safe by staying away.

"We've had some really cold weather that's built up the ice level, but now we've trended back into some warmer weather here and as with any of our storm retention ponds we always urge people to stay clear of them, just given that they are constantly moving and flowing and changing," he says. "With this warm weather we get the snowmelt that happens and the melt that goes into the storm drains eventually ends up back in the lakes and storm retention ponds."

Zebedee says that moving water underneath isn't seen so the ice may look thick but it can be deceiving.

The ice rinks at Emerson lake are now pools of water.

He says there are some ponds in the area that don't freeze over very well due to natural springs.

"It's always these areas that we tell people, use extreme caution and really pay attention to ice conditions."

Zebedee says his crews are well trained in ice rescue but they hope they don't have to use it.
