Foothills MP John Barlow is concerned for the local economy in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Barlow, who's back in the riding with parliament closed down for the next few weeks, says he has genuine fears for local business.

"You look closer to home with small businesses, restaurants, retailers all really questioning if this goes on for an extended period of time are they going to be able to survive."

Barlow says it's more important than ever to help keep local businesses afloat during this time of crisis.

"I would encourage people to continue to live their lives. You know you can go to restaurants, you can go to stores. Support our local businesses now more than ever. You know we need to ensure that those dollars continue to be spent on our economy to ensure that our small businesses remain solvent."

Barlow says the larger economic picture like the stock market and oil prices are important, but if people want to make a difference they need to do it locally.
