A special public avalanche warning has been issued for backcountry regions in B.C. and Alberta.

The same warm temperatures we've been enjoying are likely to have a destabilizing effect on snowpack.

The warning applies to North and South Columbias, Purcells, Kootenay Boundary, Lizard Range, South Rockies, and Glacier, Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks.

Avalanche Canada says there have been some close calls reported in those regions, and they're encouraging people to be cautious or avoid adjacent regions entirely.

Backcountry users are reminded to check forecasts ahead of time and to bring gear like a transceiver and a shovel.

The warning will remain in effect until the end of Monday, Jan. 24.

A map of the affected areas can be found here.
